Chemical & petrochemical
Solvents, reactors and tank farms. ATEX Zone 1 iPhones from intake to loading bay.
The hazard
Where the hazard is
Solvent vapour is released every time a reactor is charged, a sample is drawn or a tank vents during filling, putting the reactor hall and tank farm in Zone 1. With one certified iPhone or iPad, operators carry the same device from the control room to the loading bay, with no swap at the door.
Reactors and solvent handling
Most solvent vapour is heavier than air and settles in trenches, pits and floor drains. Zone 1 at manways and sampling points.
Tank farms and loading
Tanks vent most on warm days and while filling, and splash loading builds static. Zone 1 in the bund and at the loading bay.
Powder handling
Fine powders stay airborne at charging and bagging, and dust on ledges can be lifted into a second cloud. Zone 21, Zone 22 beyond.
The cost today
What the two-device routine costs
Most sites solve the zone boundary with a second device: a legacy Ex phone with a small screen, a weak camera and its own app catalogue. The cost rarely shows up on an invoice. It shows up as photos that get retaken, readings written down and typed in later, and calls that wait until someone is back in the safe area.
- Two devices, two loginsOne for the office, one for the zone. Neither talks to the other.
- Paper between zone and deskReadings and checklists re-typed after the round, with the errors that brings.
- Grainy photos, no videoLegacy cameras cannot show the problem well enough for onshore or the vendor to help.
- Apps that do not existYour MES, CMMS or Teams have no version for the rugged handset.
The shift
One device. Every zone on the site.
From the control room to the tank farm the classification changes with every door and every fence line. The device does not. Select an area to see what changes and what stays the same.
The work
What your team does with it
- Operator rounds and readings Log gauge readings, sample IDs and abnormal conditions where you see them. Straight into the DCS or CMMS app.
- Maintenance with SAP PM in hand Open the work order at the pump, attach the photo, close it there.
- Sampling and lab handover Scan the sample label, timestamp it, hand over to LIMS without paper.
- Video support from the vendor Let the equipment supplier see the fault inside the zone. No site visit for a first diagnosis.
- Training and SOPs at the unit The current procedure, on the device, where the work happens.
