Energy & hydrogen

Electrolysers, gas storage, dispensers. IIC explosion-proof iPhones for the new fuels.

Energy & hydrogen

The hazard

Where the hazard is

Hydrogen leaks more readily than other gases and ignites with a fraction of the energy methane needs. Compressor seals, vents and dispensers are typical Zone 1 release points. With a certified iPhone, a lone operator stays reachable inside them, and on an iPad they close checksheets at the skid.

Electrolysis and gas processing

Hydrogen rises and collects under the roof of an enclosed electrolyser, and its flame is close to invisible in daylight. Typically Zone 1.

Compression, storage and vents

At several hundred bar a small leak becomes a jet, and boil-off from liquid hydrogen tanks is vented. Zone 1 outdoors.

Turbine halls and battery rooms

Generator casings hold pressurised hydrogen, which leaks most at shaft seals and during purging. Battery rooms gas on charge. Zone 1 and 2.

The cost today

What the two-device routine costs

Most sites solve the zone boundary with a second device: a legacy Ex phone with a small screen, a weak camera and its own app catalogue. The cost rarely shows up on an invoice. It shows up as photos that get retaken, readings written down and typed in later, and calls that wait until someone is back in the safe area.

  • Two devices, two loginsOne for the office, one for the zone. Neither talks to the other.
  • Paper between zone and deskReadings and checklists re-typed after the round, with the errors that brings.
  • Grainy photos, no videoLegacy cameras cannot show the problem well enough for onshore or the vendor to help.
  • Apps that do not existYour MES, CMMS or Teams have no version for the rugged handset.

The shift

One device. Every zone on the site.

From the control room to the electrolyser hall and out to the dispenser, the classification changes at every skid boundary. The device does not. Select an area to see what changes and what stays the same.

    The work

What your team does with it

    • Lone worker cover on an empty plant Check-in, escalation and a normal phone call from inside Zone 1.
    • Commissioning and handover in the field Checksheets, punch items and tag photos at the equipment. Whatever your EPC runs completions on.
    • Video call to the electrolyser supplier Show the OEM the fault on the skid. A first diagnosis without a flight.
    • Operator rounds and readings Cell voltage, electrolyte level, dryer status, logged at the instrument. Straight into the CMMS.
    • Permits, isolation and purge verification Open the permit, photograph the isolation, confirm the purge. Signed where the work is.
