Food & beverage

Flour, sugar, grain, spirits. Explosion-proof iPhones for zones most people never think of.

The hazard

Where the hazard is

Flour and sugar hang in the air at sack tipping, and a blast of compressed air can lift settled dust into a cloud. Ethanol vapour escapes in the still house. With a certified iPhone or iPad, staff photograph, scan and sign off in every room, with one enclosed device listed on the glass register.

Powder and dust handling

A flour layer as thick as a paperclip, spread across a room, can fuel a secondary explosion. Zone 21 around equipment, 20 inside.

Spirits, solvents and flavourings

Spirit at filling strength flashes around room temperature, and its vapour sinks to the floor. Hexane flashes far lower. Zone 1.

Refrigeration and biogas

Ammonia is hard to ignite, but a big leak in a closed engine room can reach its flammable range. AD plants add methane. Often Zone 2.

The cost today

What the two-device routine costs

Most sites solve the zone boundary with a second device: a legacy Ex phone with a small screen, a weak camera and its own app catalogue. The cost rarely shows up on an invoice. It shows up as photos that get retaken, readings written down and typed in later, and calls that wait until someone is back in the safe area.

  • Two devices, two loginsOne for the office, one for the zone. Neither talks to the other.
  • Paper between zone and deskReadings and checklists re-typed after the round, with the errors that brings.
  • Grainy photos, no videoLegacy cameras cannot show the problem well enough for onshore or the vendor to help.
  • Apps that do not existYour MES, CMMS or Teams have no version for the rugged handset.

The shift

One device. Every zone on the site.

From the QA office to the mill floor and out to the spirit store, the classification changes room by room, and so does the hygiene policy. The device does not. Select an area to see what changes and what stays the same.

    The work

What your team does with it

    • Dust and housekeeping rounds Photograph build-up on ledges, ducts and filter housings and raise the clean-down on the spot.
    • Bearing and drive checks Catch a hot bearing near sugar or flour early. Log the reading, photograph it and raise the work order there.
    • Cameras in the still house Many distilleries do not allow one. Document a leak or a seal at the spirit safe without leaving the room.
    • Line clearance and allergen changeover Checklist, barcode scan and photo evidence at the line, straight into your quality system.
    • Glass and brittle plastic rounds One enclosed device, on the register, running the inspection it is listed on.
