Pharma & life sciences
GMP floors, API synthesis, solvents. Batch records on an ATEX iPhone at the point of work.
The hazard
Where the hazard is
Ethanol and IPA give off flammable vapour in wet granulation, and fine powders form dust clouds at charging and milling, putting the suites in Zone 1 or Zone 21. On a certified iPad, operators sign the batch record at the step itself, with an iPhone for photos, deviations and calls.
Solvent handling
Ethanol and IPA flash below room temperature, so every open vessel and fluid bed dryer exhaust carries flammable vapour. Zone 1.
Powders and dust
Many fine APIs ignite with very little energy, powder transfer builds static, and cleaning lifts settled dust back into the air. Zone 21.
Storage and loading
Every drum decant, tanker delivery and waste solvent transfer releases vapour at the connection point. Zone 1, indoors and out.
The cost today
What the two-device routine costs
Most sites solve the zone boundary with a second device: a legacy Ex phone with a small screen, a weak camera and its own app catalogue. The cost rarely shows up on an invoice. It shows up as photos that get retaken, readings written down and typed in later, and calls that wait until someone is back in the safe area.
- Two devices, two loginsOne for the office, one for the zone. Neither talks to the other.
- Paper between zone and deskReadings and checklists re-typed after the round, with the errors that brings.
- Grainy photos, no videoLegacy cameras cannot show the problem well enough for onshore or the vendor to help.
- Apps that do not existYour MES, CMMS or Teams have no version for the rugged handset.
The shift
One device. Every zone on the site.
From the QA office to the granulation suite and out to the solvent tank farm, the classification changes with every airlock. The device does not. Select an area to see what changes and what stays the same.
The work
What your team does with it
- Electronic batch records at the point of work Sign the step where it happens, not at a terminal in the corridor.
- Deviations with a photo attached Straight into the QMS, timestamped, from inside the room.
- Line clearance and inspection rounds Checklists, barcode scanning, equipment status. One device.
- Video call to QA or maintenance Show the problem instead of describing it. No walk to the gowning area.
- SOPs and training on the floor The current version, always, where the work is done.
Your systems
Works with what you already run
It is a standard iPhone or iPad. Your existing systems run as they are. No ruggedised OS, no separate app store, no retraining.
- MES (PAS-X, Tulip)
- QMS (Veeva, MasterControl)
- LIMS
- SAP
- Microsoft Teams
The offer
What Xshielder provides
Not a rugged phone with a small app store. A certified enclosure around the iPhone and iPad your people already know, delivered ready for Zone 1.

Phone and enclosure certified together as one unit. Certificates and documentation ready for your HSE file.
iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone 17 and iPad Pro 11". Same iOS, same apps, same MDM your IT already runs.
Arrives ready to hand out. No field assembly, no user-serviceable parts, certification intact.
Photo, video and LiDAR work through the enclosure. We test it and publish the results.
Apple Business Manager and your MDM. Lock it to camera-only or open it up fully.
Apple's long update cycle and our support keep devices in the field for years, not seasons.
