Utilities & wastewater

Digesters, pump stations, biogas. An explosion-proof iPhone for every site on the estate.

Utilities & wastewater

The hazard

Where the hazard is

Sludge in a digester produces methane around the clock, and sewer gas collects under a wet well cover until someone lifts it. With a certified iPhone, an operator working alone has the camera, the permit and a way to call for help at every site.

Digesters and biogas

Biogas is mostly methane and rises from roof vents and relief valves, while hydrogen sulphide sinks. Zone 0 inside, Zone 1 at the roof.

Pumping stations and wet wells

Sewage held at low flow turns septic and gives off more gas, which turbulence at the inlet releases. Commonly Zone 1 below coping level.

Inlet works and sludge handling

Sludge keeps gassing in holding tanks, and covered channels need extraction to keep levels down. Zone 1 where it cannot be relied on.

The cost today

What the two-device routine costs

Most sites solve the zone boundary with a second device: a legacy Ex phone with a small screen, a weak camera and its own app catalogue. The cost rarely shows up on an invoice. It shows up as photos that get retaken, readings written down and typed in later, and calls that wait until someone is back in the safe area.

  • Two devices, two loginsOne for the office, one for the zone. Neither talks to the other.
  • Paper between zone and deskReadings and checklists re-typed after the round, with the errors that brings.
  • Grainy photos, no videoLegacy cameras cannot show the problem well enough for onshore or the vendor to help.
  • Apps that do not existYour MES, CMMS or Teams have no version for the rugged handset.

The shift

One device. Every zone on the site.

From the control building to the digester deck and out to a pumping station 40 minutes away, the classification changes at every door and every hatch. The device does not. Select an area to see what changes and what stays the same.

    The work

What your team does with it

    • Confined space entry at the chamber The permit, the gas readings and the sign-in where the entry happens, not transcribed back at the depot.
    • Pumping station rounds Wet well condition, ragging, float and valve checks, photographed before and after, straight into the work order.
    • Inspection photos in the dark Digester roof plates, gas membranes, corroded vents. 48 MP camera and LiDAR, inside the zone.
    • Video call from the asset Show the fault to a process engineer or CHP vendor 90 minutes away. Teams, FaceTime or your own tool.
    • GIS and work orders at an unmarked site The map, the asset history and the job, on the device you drove there with.
